Soho, Manhattan
I lived in Soho for 8 years and discovered my favorite restaurants and stores! While people want to live here for the cobblestone streets, cast-iron architecture and unit loft spaces, there is much more to the neighborhood including access to public transportation!
There are still a lot of artists that live in the area - most of the apartments need work so knowing an architect and contractor will most likely be necessary to buy within a specific budget! There are a ton of retail stores and because they don’t get much traffic, you can establish one-on-one relationships with many of the managers. Many of the residents own multiple homes, so it is very quiet during the summers.
Most of the apartments do not have private outdoor spaces (or roof decks) - people buying here are looking for intimacy with most buildings having under 10 units. It is one of the most expensive areas in the city because the architecture is unique. Back in the 70’s politicians tried passing a law to demolish the cast-iron buildings to build a highway but it was rejected so its still one of the only neighborhoods with smaller buildings.
Soho is now a haven for NYC’s creative communities - in 2019 the city tried to re-zone soho to expand the definition of what an artist is to include graphic designers, computer programmers, and advertising. But the meetings were halted!
“Soho has a long history of inspiring New York’s creative communities. The same lofts that used to house manufacturing factories in the 1950s are now home to photo studios, fashion houses, and art galleries.” - COMPASS.COM
Some of my favorite restaurants:
Antique Garage - great platters & live music
Blue Ribbon Brasserie & Sushi - they really get to know you on a personal level
Lure Fishbar (for the happy hour)
